ÖBB FLIRT Akku trains ordered for Lower Austria
14.03.2026
ÖBB FLIRT Akku trains are part of a new Stadler order for seven battery-powered electric units, as reported by RailwayPro. The Austrian operator plans to use them in Lower Austria. Delivery is scheduled for 2028.

ÖBB FLIRT Akku trains for non-electrified lines
These trains will support emission-free operation on non-electrified lines. Also, they are set to replace diesel trains from 2029. This includes the Kamptalbahn and Erlauftalbahn lines.

The FLIRT Akku can run under overhead lines. Meanwhile, it can also operate on non-electrified sections. It stores energy in onboard batteries for those sections.
Battery trains to replace diesel services
According to Stadler, each train will have more than 160 seats. In addition, the trains will offer step-free access for passengers with reduced mobility. They will also include space for bicycles and prams. At the same time, they will provide power sockets and USB-C ports.
Stadler says the seven trains will save around 500,000 litres of diesel per year. Separately, annual CO₂ emissions are expected to fall by about 1,200 tonnes. Those figures are measured against the diesel trains due to be withdrawn.
Stadler framework agreement for FLIRT Akku trains
The latest order comes under the 2023 framework agreement between ÖBB and Stadler. Still, the overall agreement covers up to 120 FLIRT Akku trains. The first order covered 16 trains for the Kamptalbahn line, as previously covered by RailwayPro.
