Oakville GO station expansion signals bigger rail shift
02.06.2026
Oakville GO station expansion is now under construction, with Metrolinx moving ahead on a project tied to its CA$15 billion GO Expansion program. The work forms part of a wider push to upgrade commuter-rail infrastructure as population growth and passenger demand continue to rise.

The Oakville stop already plays a major role on the Lakeshore West route. It is the busiest GO Transit station on that corridor and sits second across the network, behind only Union Station in downtown Toronto. Metrolinx officials said the GO service area — including the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Region, Kitchener-Waterloo, Barrie and Niagara — is expected to reach 15 million people by 2051.
Oakville GO station expansion and 15-minute service plans
The GO Expansion program is meant to create enough capacity for trains every 15 minutes or better on core routes. Oakville’s Lakeshore West route falls within that plan, which links the station upgrade directly to future service growth.
At the station itself, the planned works include rehabilitated platforms with accessibility improvements, a new pedestrian bridge, elevators, and stairways connecting platforms with parking areas. Metrolinx also plans architectural, mechanical and electrical service upgrades as part of the same project.
Metrolinx awards the Oakville GO construction contract
Design development for the Oakville project began in December 2024. Metrolinx awarded the construction contract to Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture in April of this year, though the agency has not announced a projected completion date.
While the work is underway, construction crews will build a temporary widened joint platform. The official GO Transit construction notice says that arrangement is intended to keep customer access to trains available as the main station improvements proceed.
