Northern Trains Launches Ambitious Fleet Renewal with Sustainable Innovations
17.01.2025
Northern Trains has unveiled plans to modernize its fleet, introducing up to 450 sustainable trains. This bold initiative marks a significant step toward enhancing travel across the Northern network. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Northern Trains Announces Sustainable Fleet Renewal
Five manufacturers, including Alstom, CAF, Hitachi, Siemens Mobility, and Stadler, are competing to supply these advanced trains. Northern Trains aims to integrate electric-only and bi-mode units that meet modern sustainability standards.

The focus is on trains capable of converting to electric or battery operation over their lifetime. This approach supports the UK’s net-zero emissions target while addressing the limited electrification of the Northern network, which currently covers only 25%.
Tricia Williams, Managing Director of Northern Trains, emphasized the importance of sustainability. She highlighted the fleet’s modernization as a “game-changer” for passengers, aligning with long-term environmental goals.
Modernization Timeline and Impact on Northern Trains
Framework agreements are expected by 2026, with train deliveries beginning in 2030. Financing discussions for this ambitious project are set to commence in 2025, ensuring timely execution of each phase.
The first phase will replace Class 150, 155, and 156 DMUs, alongside introducing 12 three-car EMUs. These units will operate on the newly electrified Transpennine Route, enhancing connectivity between key cities.
Subsequent phases will gradually replace older fleets, simplifying operations and reducing maintenance costs. The project aims to streamline staff training and improve overall efficiency, benefitting millions of passengers.
Nearly 60% of Northern’s current trains are over 30 years old, underlining the urgent need for upgrades. The transition to modern, eco-friendly trains will transform the passenger experience and reduce environmental impact.
Northern Trains’ commitment to innovation ensures a brighter future for regional travel. By replacing ageing vehicles with advanced technology, the company sets a new standard for sustainable and reliable rail services.
