Norfolk & Western 611 Shows Its Red-White-Blue Side
01.06.2026
Norfolk & Western 611 is heading into the “Summer of Steam” season with a red, white and blue appearance. The J Class 4-8-4 locomotive received the patriotic makeover for excursions on the Buckingham Branch’s Virginia Scenic Railway. The new look honors America’s 250th anniversary and debuted May 30 at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

Why Norfolk & Western 611 changed its look?
The paint scheme looks back to a 1970s artist’s rendering, created when N&W 611 was under consideration as a possible candidate to lead the American Freedom Train. The AFT organizers ultimately chose not to use the Norfolk & Western locomotive. The engine later returned to service after being restored for Norfolk Southern’s steam program in the early 1980s.
The new livery was completed in coordination with Sunset Models 3rd Rail. That connection with an earlier patriotic concept gives the project a clear historical reference point, while the 250th anniversary makes the redesign more than a seasonal change in appearance.
Summer of Steam excursions on Virginia Scenic Railway
Zac McGinnis, steam operations manager for the Virginia Museum of Transportation, called the project a once-in-a-lifetime event. He said the anniversary created a fitting moment to celebrate one of America’s major rail engineering icons, because railroads helped link the country together and supported industry, commerce and connections from coast to coast.
McGinnis also said railroads remain a lifeline for everyday life across America. For him, the chance to operate No. 611 during the “Summer of Steam” excursions — especially on the Fourth of July — gives the red, white and blue livery added meaning.
Staunton and Louisa excursion dates
According to the Virginia Museum of Transportation press releases, No. 611 is scheduled to lead excursions from Staunton, Virginia, for two weeks from June 12 through June 21. It will then move from Staunton to Louisa for another two weeks of trips, running from June 26 through July 5.
