Over the years, the company has built a strong reputation for safety, reliability, customer service and operational efficiency, becoming part of the everyday routine for millions of passengers.

MTR Corporation global operations and mission

Today, more than 50,000 employees help MTR carry over 10 million passenger journeys every weekday across Hong Kong, mainland China and other international markets. For more than 45 years it has acted as a Hong Kong public transport backbone, supporting daily mobility for local communities.

The corporation’s mission is to connect and support communities through caring, innovative and sustainable services, delivering what passengers value most. It draws on its experience as a vertically integrated railway business, overseeing the full lifecycle of railway systems – from planning, design and construction to commissioning, daily operation and maintenance. Alongside this role, its Rail + Property (R+P) model enables MTR to shape vibrant, well-connected districts where transport infrastructure is closely integrated with residential, commercial and community facilities.

Hong Kong public transport backbone and High Speed Rail links

In Hong Kong itself, MTR operates ten heavy railway lines, a light rail system and a feeder bus network that together carry millions of journeys each day. High Speed Rail services between Hong Kong and mainland China extend the network’s reach to about 100 destinations on the mainland, making cross-boundary travel more convenient for passengers.

Each week, MTR runs around 36,000 train services and consistently delivers an on-time performance of 99.9 per cent – a level widely regarded as an international benchmark for operational excellence. To maintain and further enhance these standards, the corporation has set aside a HK$65 billion asset renewal and maintenance investment for 2023–2027, equivalent to A$13 billion. This programme both reinforces the reliability of its rail infrastructure and accelerates the adoption of new technologies and innovations, taking asset management practices to higher levels of precision and efficiency.

Metro Trains Melbourne network performance and projects

MTR’s international expertise is clearly visible in Australia. Since taking on responsibility for operating Melbourne’s Metro Trains network in 2009, the support MTR has provided to Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) – which runs the network – has contributed to major improvements in Metro Trains Melbourne network performance and service quality.

The metropolitan system in Melbourne delivers more than 2000 train services per day over about 1000 kilometres of track, with MTM employing roughly 7000 staff working across 222 stations. Under MTM’s stewardship, network punctuality has climbed from 85.9 per cent in 2009 to more than 93 per cent in 2025, while overall service delivery now exceeds 98.7 per cent, in line with recent Metro performance reports.

MTM also plays an active role in city-wide infrastructure programmes. Its involvement in the Level Crossing Removal Project, which has removed 87 high-risk level crossings, and in the Metro Tunnel Project, which incorporates Australia’s first mixed-mode high-capacity signalling system, underlines a continued focus on safety and network enhancement. Taken together, these initiatives are expected to reshape service frequency and capacity on Melbourne’s rail network.

MTR also brings its capabilities to Sydney, where it operates the Metro M1 Line, a key element of the city’s expanding driverless metro network that is helping to reshape travel patterns, as previously covered by Railway Supply.

Sydney Metro M1 Line and London Elizabeth Line collaboration

Across all its markets, MTR’s international activities rest on collaboration and shared standards of excellence. Teams based in Hong Kong, London, Sydney and Melbourne work together to strengthen operational readiness, improve safety performance and exchange best practices in incident management and daily railway operations.

Experience from major undertakings such as the Sydney Metro M1 Line and London’s Elizabeth Line feeds directly into preparations for the opening of Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel. According to David Tang, MTR’s Property and International Business Director, this global exchange of experience enables the company to continuously improve safety, reliability and innovation across its networks and shows how pooled expertise can advance urban mobility.

Driving excellence in rail and urban development

From its roots in Hong Kong to its international rail operations – including MTM in Melbourne and the Sydney Metro M1 Line – MTR Corporation showcases the potential of integrated, innovation-led transport solutions. By bringing together world-leading rail services, the Rail + Property model and sustainable urban development under one umbrella, MTR Corporation global operations continue to link cities, support communities and set new standards for performance in global rail transport.
