AUSTRALIA: Overhead wires came down onto a Sydney Trains service for at least the third time in 15 months on Friday evening, trapping passengers between Redfern and Erskineville — and this time, officials say it wasn’t the wires themselves that failed.

The South Coast Line train and two nearby services were brought to a halt around 4:30pm on Aug. 14 when live 1,500-volt wiring fell onto the train, according to Sydney Times. Power was isolated to safely evacuate hundreds of stranded commuters, with all detrainments completed before 8pm; some passengers were guided along the tracks to safety, according to The Nightly.

“A freak issue,” not worn wires

Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray described the incident as a “freak issue,” explicitly ruling out worn wire thickness as the cause and instead pointing toward an unexpected electrical fault. Technicians are continuing to investigate the root cause over the weekend. This is at least the third time overhead wiring has come down on the Sydney network since May 2025, following incidents near Strathfield and Artarmon that Railway Supply covered at the time; the announcement does not specify whether Friday’s failure is connected to those earlier events.

Trains running again after an overnight fix

Emergency repair crews worked through the night to restore all six affected lines between Redfern and Erskineville, allowing weekend services to operate on schedule. At the height of the disruption, six of Sydney’s nine train lines were affected, along with intercity services heading west and north; Transport for NSW activated a surge-pricing waiver with Uber and ran replacement buses between Ashfield and Lidcombe to help absorb the stranded passengers.
