Milwaukee port export facility expansion at Port Milwaukee

DeLong owns and operates the $40 million Agricultural Maritime Export Facility at Port Milwaukee. Also, the site is served by CPKC and Union Pacific Railroad. It exports distiller’s dried grains, soybeans, corn and other agricultural products. In addition, those shipments move to international markets via the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway.

On March 31, the Soy Transportation Coalition presented a ceremonial $200,000 check. It went to the port and DeLong for the project. The Iowa Soybean Association said the check honored soybean farmers. Meanwhile, coalition officials said the expansion will enhance capacity to export U.S. soybeans and soybean meal. They made that statement in a press release.

Second-phase work and grant support

That second phase came after the facility’s 2023 launch at the Milwaukee port. Separately, officials said the facility allows barge loading in all 12 months of the year. Those barges can ultimately connect to Gulf Coast terminals via the Illinois and Mississippi rivers.

For example, the second phase added two grain storage silos. It also upgraded electrical service and handling equipment. DeLong and the port obtained a $9.3 million grant for the project. Still, it came through the U.S. Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program. The detail appears in Port Milwaukee’s 2023 annual report.
