PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) has completed significant work to enhance rail access to the Gdynia Port, improving freight transportation to its docks, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

Major Improvements to Rail Access at Gdynia Port Completed

This project ensures efficient and safe delivery and collection of large cargo volumes by rail in a shorter time frame.

Longer trains, up to 750 meters in length, and heavier ones, carrying 22.5 tonnes per axle, can now reach the docks, accommodating increased cargo volumes.

This will reduce the number of trucks on the road by shifting to rail transport.

As part of this project, 113.5 kilometers of new tracks out of 115 kilometers have been constructed, along with 329 turnouts out of 332 and all 24 existing level crossings.

Since March 2022, train traffic to the port has been managed by the local dispatch center of the Gdynia Port.

Construction of two viaducts, 640 meters and 170 meters long, has already been completed, improving the capacity of leading lines to the port.

The bridge over the Chilonka River has been repaired, and all 13 underground settling tanks are ready, along with a new sewage system to ensure proper drainage of the area.

All work at the port is planned to be completed by the end of the year. The remaining tasks involve the reconstruction of high-voltage lines and track construction.

The project to create better rail access in Gdynia is worth nearly 1.9 billion zlotys (410.4 million euros), with 43% being co-financed by the EU under the CEF.

In the CEF Transport competition in 2015, PKP PLK received co-financing of 162.2 million euros out of an acceptable project cost of 190.8 million euros.
