Together with the completed Papakura to Pukekohe electrification project, the stations are intended to improve rail access for the wider community. They are also intended to provide faster routes into Auckland city.

KiwiRail new train stations at Drury and Paerata

As reported by Rail Express, test trains have stopped at each platform for the first time. The checks are for clearances between the trains and the new infrastructure.

At Drury, both stairwells are in place. Also, the platform stairs, platform shelters, pedestrian bridge barriers and pipelines beneath the tracks are in place. The lift on the Great South Road side has been completed. Meanwhile, the second lift is almost finished. Carpentry work is underway. In addition, construction is continuing on the stairwell roofs.

At Paerata, six 35-metre beams have been installed for the road over rail bridge. Each beam weighs 65,000 kilograms. At the same time, all were lifted into place in a single day with a 600-tonne crane. Beams, structural steel and barriers have also been installed for the pedestrian bridge. Separately, steel and carpentry works are progressing across the bridge, the lift shafts and the stairwells.

At both stations, car park asphalting has been completed. Also, line marking, lamp posts, wheel stops and bus shelters are complete. The wetlands and landscaping are also complete.

Work has also started in the forecourt areas. For example, this includes lights, speakers, emergency egress stairs, additional shelters, yellow tactile pavers and wiring. Still, artwork by Mana Whenua features on the pedestrian bridge and road bridge barriers. KiwiRail described it as a “vital link” between the new structures and the surrounding environment.

Drury and Paerata Stations are expected to be operational in mid-2026. Meanwhile, Ngakoroa Station is set to follow in 2027. Early works have already started. In addition, major works are planned for later this year.
