According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the comment period runs through May 1. KDOT said the plan will guide the state’s approach to freight and rail transportation. It combines goals from Kansas’ long-range transportation plan with state freight and rail planning guidance, as well as passenger-rail requirements from key federal agencies.

Kansas freight and rail plan scope

The document updates KDOT’s 2023 state freight plan and 2022 state rail plan. Its focus areas include safety and security, transportation system management, asset preservation, freight and economic vitality, stewardship and workforce.

“This plan will include guidance on investment of available funds and recommendations related to projects and priorities that will help [us] meet future freight needs and growth in Kansas,” KDOT officials said.

As Progressive Railroading reports, the Kansas Freight Advisory Committee, which includes key stakeholders from the freight and rail sectors, will meet three times during the plan’s development to provide feedback and insight. Development will continue through 2026, with a final plan to be completed by January 2027.
