Indian Railways special trains support IndiGo passengers
07.12.2025
Indian Railways special trains are being rolled out across all zones for three days starting Saturday to support travellers affected by widespread IndiGo flight cancellations.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This programme of 89 special trains, announced to ease disruption for stranded passengers, has been described by outlets such as ET Infra.
Indian Railways special trains across all zones
As part of this coordinated response, Central Railway and Northern Railway have mapped out 14 and 10 special trains respectively. Officials emphasise that these figures are under constant review and may be adjusted if demand continues to rise.

In all, the 89 special trains are set to make more than 100 trips. The Railway Ministry put this plan together after analysing train traffic in major hubs such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Patna and Howrah, among others — an approach also noted by The Times of India.
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity) at the Railway Board, said the number of special trains and their trips could be increased further depending on how the traffic situation evolves. He added that all zones have been instructed to use every available resource — including rolling stock as well as manpower — so that these trains can be operated safely for the convenience of lakhs of passengers stranded in different parts of the country because of IndiGo flight cancellations.
Zone-wise response to IndiGo flight cancellations
Officials also point out that work is under way to make people aware of the additional services introduced in response to IndiGo flight cancellations. In some divisions, information about the special trains is being shared directly at nearby airports to help passengers quickly find alternative rail options. South Eastern Railway has issued a press release and informed the Airport Authority to display information on the newly introduced special train services for affected travellers.
A Western Railway press note states that seven special trains on a special fare will be operated between key routes such as Mumbai Central–New Delhi, Mumbai Central–Bhiwani, Mumbai Central–Shakur Basti, Bandra Terminus–Durgapura, Valsad–Bilaspur, Sabarmati–Delhi and Sabarmati–Delhi Sarai Rohilla. These Western Railway special trains on special fare are intended to provide extra capacity on busy corridors where passengers have been particularly affected, in line with broader coverage of the initiative by The Indian Express.
In the same vein, South Central Railway announced on Saturday that it will operate four special trains to handle the surge in passenger volumes caused by the large-scale cancellation of IndiGo flights. Central Railway and Northern Railway special trains are also being reassessed so that capacity can be shifted or expanded if requirements continue to grow.
Communication and ongoing measures for stranded passengers
Other zones have issued notifications setting out their special trains and schedules, allowing passengers to plan new journeys more easily. Taken together, this broader Railway Ministry response to stranded passengers is aimed at creating a temporary network of services that can absorb demand until IndiGo operations stabilise.
These measures follow at least five consecutive days during which IndiGo flight operations have been significantly disrupted, with a large number of cancellations and delays causing hardships for thousands of passengers. In many cases, baggage has also been misplaced, adding to the difficulties travellers face.
Against this backdrop, Indian Railways special trains and the additional services from South Central Railway and South Eastern Railway are meant to offer a reliable alternative for those who urgently need to complete their trips.
