Indian Railways infrastructure projects: depots, doubling, bypass
28.02.2026
Indian Railways infrastructure projects worth Rs. 871 crore have been approved to accelerate rail modernisation across Rajasthan, Kerala and West Bengal, as reported by Railanalysis.

Also, the package focuses on expanding maintenance capacity, doubling a busy corridor section and removing a key operational bottleneck to support passenger services, freight movement and wider network efficiency.
Indian Railways infrastructure projects: Rs. 871 crore package overview
The sanctioned works span three zones—North Western Railway, Southern Railway and Eastern Railway—pairing depot modernisation with line-capacity improvements on high-utilisation routes, as Business Standard notes. In addition, the intent is to address operational constraints while building a higher-capacity, technology-driven railway network that can meet rising demand.
Depot modernisation in Rajasthan: Shri Ganganagar and Lalgarh
In Rajasthan, North Western Railway will see two separate upgrades focused on coaching maintenance facilities as modern rolling stock expands. Meanwhile, the investments are framed around improving turnaround times, reducing operational delays and supporting additional services where capacity allows.

Shri Ganganagar: coach maintenance facilities upgrade (Phase-1)
Indian Railways has sanctioned Rs. 174.26 crore for Phase-1 development of coach maintenance facilities at Shri Ganganagar station. With increasing deployment of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches and Vande Bharat trains, the existing setup is slated for expansion to handle modern trains more efficiently.
The approved scope includes two 600-metre-long washing lines and three 650-metre stabling lines, alongside two pit lines and one wheel lathe line. It also specifies a 650-metre engine escape line and a 120m × 24m sick line shed. At the same time, the scope covers Conventional Over Head Equipment (OHE) over washing lines, an Automatic Coach Washing Plant, and equipment such as synchronized jacks, forklifts and 25-tonne EOT cranes.
Once commissioned, the site is expected to increase maintenance capacity by six additional rakes per day, supporting faster cycles through the depot and enabling the introduction of additional train services in the region.
Lalgarh: Phase-2 augmentation to build a modern maintenance hub
A second approval in Rajasthan allocates Rs. 139.68 crore for Phase-2 augmentation of coaching maintenance facilities at Lalgarh. With limited expansion potential at Bikaner, Lalgarh is being upgraded into a fully equipped maintenance depot to handle advanced trainsets including Vande Bharat.
The approved works include construction of a 600-metre washing line and a covered shed over four washing lines, plus a 120m × 16m extension of the sick line and a 1000 sq. metre service building. Separately, the plan specifies retractable OHE over washing line No. 4, two synchronized coach lifting systems, two Automatic Coach Washing Plants and two 25-tonne EOT cranes.
The upgrade is expected to enhance maintenance preparedness in the Bikaner region, improving reliability of premium services and directly supporting the expansion of Vande Bharat and LHB operations in Rajasthan.
Kerala capacity enhancement: doubling the Turavur–Mararikulam section
The largest allocation in the package—Rs. 450.59 crore—has been approved for doubling the 21.10-km Turavur–Mararikulam section under Southern Railway in Kerala. The section lies on the Ernakulam–Alappuzha–Kayankulam corridor, which experiences heavy passenger traffic and substantial freight movement, including cargo linked to Cochin Port.
The stated benefits of doubling include operation of nine additional passenger trains per day in each direction and an increase in freight handling capacity of approximately 2.88 million tonnes annually. The project also targets time savings, with a reduction in freight train detention of 17–19 minutes and passenger train time savings of 12–15 minutes, alongside improved punctuality and corridor efficiency.
With the corridor currently operating at high capacity utilisation, the doubling is positioned as a way to ease congestion-related constraints and strengthen connectivity. It is also expected to support smoother port-linked freight movement, facilitating better cargo flow and supporting Kerala’s economic activity.
West Bengal operational decongestion: Kalipahari Bypass Line
In Eastern Railway, Indian Railways has sanctioned Rs. 107.10 crore for construction of the 4.75-km Kalipahari Bypass Line in West Bengal. At present, trains moving between South Eastern Railway and Eastern Railway must enter Asansol Yard for engine reversal, which contributes to congestion and delays.
The bypass will directly connect the two zones and eliminate the need for engine reversal at Asansol Yard, as outlined by The Indian Express. The expected impact includes savings of nearly 90 minutes for nine freight trains daily and around 30 minutes saved for eight coaching trains, along with reduced yard congestion and improved infrastructure utilisation.
By enabling more seamless movement of trains, the Kalipahari Bypass is framed as an efficiency upgrade in one of eastern India’s busiest railway regions, reducing turnaround times and improving overall line capacity.
Long-term focus: efficiency, modern operations and future-ready capacity
Taken together, the Indian Railways infrastructure projects package reflects a targeted approach to expanding capacity and removing bottlenecks across three zones: depot modernisation in Rajasthan (North Western Railway), track doubling in Kerala (Southern Railway) and bypass construction for operational decongestion in West Bengal (Eastern Railway).
Still, the emphasis on Automatic Coach Washing Plants, synchronized lifting systems and improved OHE infrastructure also reflects a shift toward more technology-enabled rail operations. Overall, the Rs. 871 crore sanction is presented as a decisive step toward faster trains, smoother freight movement and enhanced passenger comfort, reinforcing rail’s role in national connectivity and economic growth.
