Hungary Seeks Swiss Trains to Revolutionize Rail System
27.01.2025
Hungary is in active discussions to acquire Swiss trains as part of its rail modernization strategy. János Lázár, the Minister for Construction and Transport, confirmed the negotiations recently. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

“There is a strong possibility Hungary will purchase a significant fleet of Swiss motor trains,” Lázár shared in an interview with Boon.hu. He highlighted Switzerland’s unmatched punctuality rates, which reach 90-100%, compared to Hungary’s 75%.

The disparity stems from Switzerland’s consistent investment in modernizing infrastructure and rolling stock. “While Swiss trains are replaced every 10 years, Hungary’s fleet operates for 40-50 years,” he explained.
Hungary Looks to Switzerland’s Advanced Rail Fleet
Hungarian publication Világgazdaság detailed options for trains available from Switzerland’s SBB. Potential acquisitions include 60 Bombardier double-decker units and 113 Stadler Kiss trains.
Additional models under consideration are 60 Siemens Desiro units, 110 Stadler GTW trains, and 200 Stadler Flirt trains. Switzerland’s transition to newer Stadler Flirt models starting in 2026 may free up older models for purchase by Hungary.
Hungary’s Comprehensive Rail Modernization Plan
This acquisition aligns with Hungary’s overarching rail modernization program. Earlier this year, János Lázár announced the replacement of every second electric locomotive by mid-2026.
Hungary’s fleet currently includes 200 electric locomotives, of which 150 are between 40 and 60 years old. The plan also involves acquiring 100 refurbished and 285 brand-new InterCity rail cars to boost efficiency.
Adopting Swiss trains reflects Hungary’s commitment to improving rail infrastructure, reducing delays, and delivering better passenger experiences. With Swiss technology, Hungary aims to enhance its transportation network’s reliability and performance, meeting global standards.
