Hudson Tunnel Project outreach center opens in Weehawken

Hudson Tunnel Project outreach in New Jersey now includes a new public engagement center that the Gateway Development Commission has opened in Weehawken.

GDC now has two community engagement centers near active Hudson Tunnel Project construction sites⁠, with one in New Jersey and the other in New York.

Through the centers, members of the public can speak with GDC staff and learn about the $16 billion project. Visitors can review educational displays, videos, models and interactive digital maps, while GDC officials said staff members are available at the centers to answer questions.

Community engagement centers and tunnel work

GDC CEO Tom Prendergast linked the outreach effort to the commission’s work with communities where Hudson Tunnel Project construction is taking place.

“GDC is committed to being a good neighbor to the communities where we are building the Hudson Tunnel Project and to making sure everyone who will benefit from reliable, modern rail travel into, out of, and through New York City understands the work we are doing and is up to speed on our progress,” said GDC CEO Tom Prendergast.

The Hudson Tunnel Project covers construction and rehabilitation of rail tunnel infrastructure beneath the Hudson River⁠. The existing 110-year-old tunnel carries more than 200,000 passenger trips⁠ between New Jersey and New York City each weekday, according to the Rail Passengers Association.

Context

The New Jersey engagement center opens while the Hudson Tunnel Project is divided into ten construction packages, with seven in progress or completed. The wider project includes nine miles of new passenger rail track between New York and New Jersey, including a new two-tube tunnel under the Hudson River, followed by rehabilitation of the existing North River Tunnel.
