Hudson Rail Tunnel contract adds New Jersey package

Hudson Rail Tunnel contract work is moving ahead in New Jersey after the Gateway Development Commission awarded a USD 711 million deal for Package 3, adding another major work package to the wider Gateway Program.
The award went to the Skanska and Creamer Sanzari NJSA JV consortium. GDC is the tripartite public authority responsible for delivering the Gateway Program, described as the largest rail project in the United States.
Package 3 covers Hudson Rail Tunnel contract works
Package 3 covers the surface alignment works linked to the future rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River. The tunnel is intended to connect New Jersey with the Northeast Corridor rail network.
Construction under the contract will begin this year. The scope includes about 1.5 miles, or 2.4 km, of new rail infrastructure needed to integrate the future tunnel with the existing rail system.
The package also includes several civil engineering elements, including retaining walls, viaducts, bridges, and the relocation of existing infrastructure.
Surface alignment works in New Jersey
In New Jersey, the surface section of the Hudson Tunnel project will run from the Secaucus area to the tunnel portal in North Bergen. The alignment will pass through the Meadowlands region.
In total, 2.3 km of new infrastructure is planned for this section. The scope includes viaducts, embankments, access roads, and utility relocation.
The works will be carried out near active railway lines, requiring close operational coordination, strengthened safety measures, and compliance with environmental protection rules in wetland areas.
Hudson Tunnel Program construction progress
Seven of the ten construction packages for the project are already underway or have been completed. This points to accelerated progress in the implementation of the Hudson Rail Tunnel project.
Another contract was also awarded recently for the construction of two 2.2-kilometer tunnels. That package is valued at USD 1.29 billion.
The Hudson Rail Tunnel forms a central part of the Hudson Tunnel Program, which is considered essential for modernizing rail connections between New Jersey and New York.
Authorities have said the Package 3 contract marks an important step for the Hudson Tunnel project in New Jersey. They also linked it to the creation of a safer, more efficient, and more modern rail corridor between New York and New Jersey.
