Hudson-Bergen light-rail mechanics vote for TWU

NJ Transit light-rail mechanics voted yesterday to join the Transport Workers Union of America. They work on the Hudson-Bergen light-rail system.

A TWU press release said all light-rail employees are now part of TWU. Mechanics and car cleaners are employed by North Central Transit Services, Progressive Railroading reported. Meanwhile, operators and maintenance-of-way employees work for ACI-Herzog.

TWU Local 299 prepares for first contract
“With [the] mechanics … joining the TWU, we now have a unified workforce ready to fight more effectively,” TWU International President John Samuelsen said. “Today’s successful vote now sets up bargaining for a first contract that will lead to better pay, quality-of-life and working conditions for NJ Transit mechanics.”
Separately, TWU Local 299 represents workers on the Hudson-Bergen light-rail system. In addition, the mechanics increase TWU Local 299’s membership by 30%, union officials said.
