Hamilton LRT enters alliance development after contract
11.05.2026
Hamilton LRT has entered its next project stage. Hamilton Transit Alliance was selected after a competitive procurement process. The alliance will deliver the first major work. Aecon Infrastructure leads the alliance, with Hatch, Egis and Systra as designers. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The first major construction contract covers preparatory work along the light rail route. It includes utility relocations, grade separations, road reconstruction, upgraded sidewalks and traffic control systems. In addition, the package remains focused on preparatory civil and utility work. Separately, stops, rail and systems remain part of a second procurement.
Hamilton LRT route and early works
Once completed, the new transit line will extend for 14 kilometres. It will include stops at McMaster University, Hamilton Stadium and Eastgate Square. Other stops include Ottawa Street, Gage Park, downtown Hamilton and other key destinations.
Meanwhile, early works and utility relocation projects are already underway.
Also, several civil and utility infrastructure improvements will be delivered for the City of Hamilton. For example, the improvements include:
• 14 kms of sewer replacement and separation
• 16 kms of watermain replacement
• 14 kms of road reconstruction
• 28 kms of replaced and upgraded sidewalks
• 62 upgraded and replaced traffic signals
Alliance development phase
With the contract now awarded, the project is entering an alliance development phase. During this stage, the parties will progress the designs, costs and construction schedule. The development phase will last 18-24 months.
The alliance approach involves direct partnership with private sector companies. It is not being administered through a third-party consortium. In addition, this structure allows for greater flexibility and collaboration among project participants. It also ensures that everyone involved is working on a “best-for-project” basis.
