Revolutionary «Green Rails» Paving the Way for Sustainable Transportation Solutions, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply, citing Saarstahl Rail.

«Green Rails» for Sustainable Mobility Solutions

A subsidiary of the Saarstahl Group has unveiled groundbreaking European «Green Rails», crafted from eco-friendly low-CO2 steel, catering to environmentally conscious clientele.

The very essence of these «Green Rails» is rooted in the circular economy model.

Saarstahl Ascoval, another arm of the Saarstahl Group, champions the recycling of industrial scrap to produce these environmentally responsible rails.

The primary source of scrap includes contributions from the Saarstahl Rail plant and various railway networks, such as France’s SNCF and Belgium’s Infrabel.

As an example, in the past year alone, SNCF supplied 40,000 tonnes of scrap rails to Saarstahl Ascoval for recycling.

This scrap is melted down in an electric arc furnace (EAF) before being transformed into blooms and rolled into the new «Green Rails» at the Hayange plant.

The entire production process is exceptionally eco-conscious, already achieving a more than 70 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional production methods, which rely on iron ore and coal as raw materials.

In 2022, Hayange received a total of 262,000 tonnes of rails, with 227,000 tonnes produced using environmentally friendly ‘green’ techniques, resulting in a remarkable reduction of 415,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

«Green Rails» are predominantly employed on high-speed rail networks, in local transit, and even in heavy freight transportation.

Saarstahl Rail has secured contracts for two segments of the ‘Grand-Paris Express’ infrastructure project, set to connect Greater Paris with the existing metro network by 2030.

Currently, over 6,000 tonnes of rails have already been dispatched from the Hayange facility, with a confirmed order for an additional 12,000 tonnes.

When this ambitious project reaches fruition in 2030, the Paris metro network will have the capacity to accommodate an additional two million daily commuters.

Saarstahl Rail’s extensive product portfolio includes more than 100 rail sections, available in 25 steel grades and lengths of up to 108 meters.

Saarstahl Rail operates as a subsidiary within the Saarstahl Group, headquartered in Völklingen, Germany.

The group specializes in producing rolled wire, steel bars, semi-finished products, and high-quality forged products, providing innovative solutions to address global challenges, including mobility, energy efficiency, and safety.
