GO Transit and UPX stay under Alstom contract extension
20.03.2026
Alstom contract extension with Metrolinx will keep operations and maintenance services in place for two of its divisions under a renewed agreement announced on 20 March 2026, as Alstom stated. The contract is valued at about 800 million euros[1] ($1.3 billion CAD). It will remain in force through 2031.

Alstom contract extension for GO Transit and UP Express
Under the renewed deal, Alstom will continue to handle operations and maintenance services for GO Transit rail operations across Ontario’s Greater Golden Horseshoe. It will also continue this work for Union Pearson Express (UPX). That service links downtown Toronto with Canada’s busiest airport, as noted in Metrolinx’s 2024-2025 annual report.
During 2024-2025, the company’s team of nearly 1,300 people managed 117,020 GO rail trips and 56,494 UP Express trips. At the same time, it delivered on-time performance above 97% on a mixed-use rail network.
Contract scope and performance
“Whether its introducing new riders to transit during Toronto’s biggest special events, or helping ensure frequent riders have a reliable, high-quality experience every time, Alstom has been behind the scenes helping deliver for Metrolinx and its passengers,” said Michael Keroullé, Alstom America’s President. “Our continued partnership with Metrolinx is a tribute to the excellence and experience of our local Services Team to ensure passengers needs are met safely and efficiently.”

Alstom said the expertise and commitment of its team contribute to a 95% retention rate for O&M contracts. Meanwhile, with this latest extension from Metrolinx, the company says it consolidates its position as the leading private provider of operations and maintenance services in North America.
“This renewed agreement with Alstom delivers on our government’s plan to protect Ontario by ensuring Ontario tax dollars continue to support Ontario workers, said the Honorable Prabmeet Sarkaria, Ontario Minister of Transportation and government official responsible for Metrolinx. It will strengthen the operations and maintenance capacity needed to support a more reliable GO Transit network as we expand service across the region to meet the needs of our growing province.”
Toronto, Canada jobs and rail services footprint
The extension also supports close to 1,300 direct Alstom jobs across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region. These include roles in operations. In addition, they include drivers, conductors, customer service staff, and maintenance personnel.
In rail services, Alstom says it supports customers across the full asset lifecycle through what it describes as the broadest portfolio of service solutions. Its FlexCare Operate offering spans fleet operations, maintenance for the full transit system, and turnkey and public-private partnership solutions. For example, the company says customers can lower operating costs and improve efficiency by applying technologies and practices built on more than 40 years of experience in operating and maintaining trains and systems.
Alstom in Canada and worldwide operations and maintenance services
Alstom currently has more than 25 active operations and maintenance projects worldwide. Also, it says it works with transit authorities and communities to help them achieve their mobility goals.
In Canada, as Alstom in Canada notes, Alstom employs more than 5,000 highly skilled workers and says it is the country’s only rolling stock manufacturer. Separately, the company supplies rolling stock, signalling solutions, and operations and maintenance services for major rail projects nationwide. Still, it describes itself as Canada’s national champion for urban rail mobility solutions. Also, it says it is involved in projects across Ontario, including Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Ottawa. In addition, it points to work in Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal, and, soon, Quebec City.
