Freightliner and Siemens Mobility: A New Era of Traffic Management

British logistics operator Freightliner Group, a leader in intermodal transport, has announced a major project to upgrade its locomotives, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In collaboration with Siemens Mobility, the company will independently install the European Train Control System (ETCS) on its Class 66 locomotives for the first time.
Why is this important?
Implementing ETCS is a significant step forward for Freightliner.
This system is a key component of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which ensures higher safety and efficiency in rail transport.

It automatically controls the train’s speed and compliance with signals, minimizing human errors and increasing rail network capacity.
Locomotive Fleet Upgrade
Currently, Freightliner operates over 110 Class 66 locomotives, manufactured between 2000 and 2010.
The British infrastructure agency Network Rail will also participate in the modernization project, preparing the necessary infrastructure for the updated locomotives.
This collaboration highlights the integration and coordination of all participants in the UK’s rail sector in striving for more modern and safe transport.
