It comes through a partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration and the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh. The FRA provided $175,000 of the overall funding.

Rail safety awareness grants for public education

According to Progressive Railroading, the grants will support public education campaigns by state Operation Lifesaver programs. The outreach focuses on safe behavior near railroad tracks, grade crossings and trains. Also, many campaigns are planned for See Tracks? Think Train Week. The week is scheduled for Sept. 21-27 in the fall.

“These competitive grants provide critical funding that empowers OLI state organizations to conduct highly effective public outreach, deterring the leading causes of rail-related deaths and injuries while raising awareness to reduce these tragedies,” said James Payne, staff director of the FRA grade crossing and trespasser outreach division.

In addition, Operation Lifesaver programs in California, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Washington, Connecticut, Minnesota and Missouri received the funding.
