Fortescue battery-electric locomotives for Pilbara
11.12.2025
Fortescue battery-electric locomotives are now entering the commissioning phase, with the Australian mining and heavy-haul rail operator taking delivery of two 14.5MWh units from Progress Rail, as reported by International Railway Journal.

Fortescue battery-electric locomotives on the Joule platform
The two eight-axle BE14.5BB units, described as among the most powerful battery-electric locomotives in the world, are built on Progress Rail’s Joule platform. Fortescue placed the order in 2022, and the locomotives were assembled at Progress Rail’s Sete Lagoas facility in Brazil, a timeline reflected in a Progress Rail press release and coverage by Railway Supply, before being prepared for heavy-haul operations on the company’s mining railway.
Commissioning period, Pilbara tests and launch event
According to a Fortescue spokesperson quoted by International Railway Journal, commissioning of the 14.5MWh battery-electric locomotives is scheduled for the Christmas and New Year period.

Over this window, the railway will collect and analyse data on how the locomotives perform in heavy-haul service in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Further details on how the units will be deployed are expected to be confirmed in early 2026, and Fortescue plans an official launch event for the new fleet in Port Hedland in February.
In a LinkedIn post, Fortescue Metals CEO Dino Otranto stressed that these 14.5MWh battery-electric locomotives are not merely concepts but operational assets, saying they are already helping to redefine what is possible for heavy-haul rail.
