In mid-July this year, in Charlotte, North Carolina (USA), trams with an onboard energy storage system from Medcom will be included in regular passenger service.

Due to this technology, the central railway section of the Golden Line will be launched, which residents have been waiting for for several years. This will be the first joint project of Medcom and Siemens USA without a traction line, reports Railway Supply magazine citing Nakolei Pl.

Siemens trams for North Carolina are equipped with an onboard energy storage system. The device contains LTO batteries in one box, a liquid cooling system, and battery charging and monitoring systems, which is an interesting innovation.

During the movement of the tram under the contact line, the on-board batteries are charged to the nominal values. When a tram is about to enter a section of track without a power line, the storage tank switches from loading to unloading. Then all the energy consumed by the tram comes only from the onboard energy storage system.

Interestingly, a similar technical solution is already in force in Poland. The Lajkonik trams in Krakow are also equipped with batteries and power electronics from Medcom.
