05.11.2024
PKP Intercity received a €500 million grant for fleet modernization and train upgrades. Poland’s national railway operator signed an agreement with the EU’s Center for Transport Projects, which allocated funding to buy new locomotives and modernize train carriages. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These funds will allow PKP Intercity to acquire 56 zero-emission locomotives and upgrade 248 passenger carriages. Overall, €230 million will be used for locomotive purchases, and €275 million will go toward carriage upgrades. All work is expected to finish by mid-2026, significantly enhancing travel comfort.

Newag’s plant in Nowy Sącz will supply the locomotives. The carriage modernization will occur at Pojazdów H. Cegielski’s facility in Poznań, as well as at Pesa’s plants in Bydgoszcz, Mińsk Mazowiecki, and PKP Intercity’s Remtrak facility.
Additionally, PKP Intercity is actively expanding its fleet. In July, the company signed a contract with H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych from Poznań, which had won a tender to supply 300 passenger carriages. The operator also left open the possibility to order an additional 150 carriages, contingent on project success.
In mid-October, PKP Intercity launched a tender to purchase 42 long-distance, double-decker electric trains. The total contract value is expected to reach 10 billion PLN (€2.3 billion). The agreement includes an option for 30 additional trains with 30-year technical maintenance, ensuring stable operation.
New Locomotives and Fleet Modernization
The locomotives and carriages funded by this grant will come from major Polish manufacturers, supporting local industry and creating new jobs. All funds are directed at infrastructure improvements.
The European Union’s Role in Fleet Modernization and Train Upgrades
The EU’s contribution to PKP Intercity’s fleet modernization and train upgrades highlights the importance of European cooperation in developing transport infrastructure, enhancing quality, and promoting environmental sustainability in rail transport.
