Ukrzaliznytsia accepts rolling stock of Russian carriers
22.03.2023
As announced last year, the Ukrainian government authorized the seizure of the assets of Russian rail carriers that were operating in Ukraine and had their rolling stock in Ukraine at the time of the full-scale Russian invasion. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to Rynek Kolejowy.
“Currently, there are 15,000 Russian wagons, mostly freight, on the Ukrainian tracks. They belong to 250 companies. At the first stage, we compile a list of wagon owners who are associated with Putin’s Russia. The procedure will take some time, and we have already started it,” said Oleksandr Kamyshin, thr Minister of Strategic Industries in the Ukrainian government. Prior to that, he was the head of Ukrzaliznytsia.

Freight cars are owned by the state bank VTB (VEB-Leasing and VTB-Leasing), Gazprom (Gazpromtrans), GTLK or Sberbank. Only the number of their wagons remaining in Ukraine reaches more than 3 thousand. These are mainly wagons for transporting coal, as well as wagons for transporting diesel fuel or hazardous materials plus flatcars.
Plans to nationalize Russian railcars were announced exactly a year ago. These are not only response measures to aggression, but also a solution to the problem with the number and condition of own rolling stock.
