In Russia, coal miners, whose export traffic has lost priority at the Eastern landfill, are proposing to remove all transit containers from the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) and the Trans-Siberian Railway (Trans-Siberian Mainline), reorienting them to Kazakhstan.

This is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply, citing the CFTS.

According to their calculations, transit containers take away from the infrastructure the capacity equivalent to 60 million tons of coal, and Russia, receiving $30 from each transit ton, misses $600 of export earnings.

Container market participants and experts believe that the implementation of this idea will complicate relations with China and disrupt cargo flows important for the delivery of consumer goods.

As follows from the minutes of the meeting of the Energetika commission under the State Council on March 29, the commission recommends that the government of the Russian Federation “work out the issues of minimizing up to the complete exclusion of transit transportation of goods in containers along the railway infrastructure” of the BAM and Transsib “until the effect of external sanctions pressure is lifted.”

The Commission proposes to redirect containers to the route through Kazakhstan, as well as introduce a moratorium on any changes in tariffs for the transportation of coal.

JSC Russian Railways clarified that a reduction in the priority of transit containers has already been provided for temporarily.
