Stadler Braking System Enhances Swiss Rack Railway Efficiency
28.03.2025
Stadler Unveils Advanced Braking System for Rack Railway Trains. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGBahn) and Stadler launched the first rack railway train with the Stadler braking system. The ORION electric train now runs efficiently on Switzerland’s steep Andermatt-Göschenen line.

This cutting-edge technology increases downhill train speeds to 30 km/h, surpassing the earlier limit of 21 km/h. Consequently, it enhances reliability, boosts operational speeds, and ensures precise schedule adherence on challenging routes.
Travel time between Andermatt and Göschenen now drops by four minutes, shortening the trip to 11 minutes. Moreover, one train now covers the route every 30 minutes, reducing fleet needs significantly.
MGBahn initiated this project, partnering with Stadler to develop and implement the innovative v+ solution. Switzerland’s government funded it, and the Federal Office of Transport approved its use quickly.
Stadler Braking System Drives Performance Gains
The Stadler braking system improves train performance, allowing faster descents on gradients up to 181 ‰. Thus, MGBahn optimizes operations and cuts costs while maintaining top safety standards.
Looking ahead, MGBahn plans to equip 25 ORION trains with this technology starting in 2026. Additionally, existing trains will receive upgrades, enhancing the fleet’s overall efficiency and reliability.
Back in March 2020, MGBahn and Stadler signed a deal, ordering 12 three-car ORION trains initially. Then, in November 2023, they secured a $246 million contract for 25 more units.
The ORION trains, built for 1000 mm gauge tracks, use an 11 kV, 16.67 Hz power network. So, this upgrade marks a major step forward for Switzerland’s rack railway system.
Stadler Braking System Sets New Industry Standards
Stadler’s expertise delivers a solution that excels on steep terrains, improving speed and precision effortlessly. Meanwhile, MGBahn advances rail travel with sustainable, cutting-edge technology for the future.
This collaboration establishes a benchmark for rack railway operations, blending safety, speed, and efficiency seamlessly. As a result, passengers enjoy quicker trips, and operators gain streamlined schedules affordably.
The v+ technology transforms the Andermatt-Göschenen route and signals more rail advancements ahead. Therefore, MGBahn and Stadler continue pushing innovation, keeping Switzerland a rail industry leader.
With deliveries set for 2026, the rollout will modernize the fleet and boost service quality further. Ultimately, this project highlights how teamwork and innovation solve complex railway challenges effectively.
