During January-May 2021, port operators in the seaports of Ukraine handled 55.4 million tons of cargo, which is 12.6 million tons or 18.6% less than in the same period last year.

However, the seaports administration is seeing a decrease in negative dynamics, according to the railway magazine Railway Supply:

  • January – (-25.5%);
  • January-February – (-23.4%);
  • January-March – (-20.4%);
  • January-April – (-19.6%).

Ports handled ore and grain cargo – 15.7 million tons (-14.1%) and 14.6 million tons (-33.1%), respectively. At the same time, the transshipment of oil products for 5 months of this year increased by 46.7% and amounted to 657.7 thousand tons.

At the end of the reporting period, the transshipment of export cargo amounted to 42.6 million tons (-18.6%), import – 8.8 million tons (-13.4%), transit – 3.4 million tons (-25%), coastal – 484.8 thousand tons (-42.5%). In terms of container traffic, in 5 months of this year, the ports handled 415,532 TEU containers, which is 6.4% less than in the same period in 2020.

Rail transport

Earlier, SE MTP Yuzhny entered into an agreement with Metinvest regarding fixed volumes of ore transshipment on a monthly basis with an increase in transshipment costs. We are talking about 1.2 million tons of cargo transshipment per month.
