The SM03-620 shunting diesel locomotive was manufactured in 1966 at the Fablok plant in Chrzanow, the first locomotive plant in Poland. A few years ago SM03-620 was thrown into a scrap yard, but the Polish company Mag-Train Sp. z o. o. and TOR-BUD Sp. z o. o. decided to restore it.

The production of locomotives of the SM03 series began in 1959 at the Fablok plant in Chrzanow. The cars had a 2DSR 150 Wola engine with a power of 150 hp. They were used for light shunting work on small sidings, especially on industrial railways.

From 1959 to 1966, the Fablok plant produced 671 SM03 locomotives, only 229  of which were for PKP. After production was transferred to Zaodrzański Zakład Przemysłu Metalowego Zastal, 40 more SM03 diesel locomotives were produced.

In 1968, thanks to the Zastal plant, a new version of the SM03 diesel locomotive was created, which received the name SM04. The main modification was the installation of the 160 hp Henschel 10H6 engine. A year later, Zastal made another replacement of the engine with the type 14H6 with a capacity of 180 hp, as a result of which diesel locomotives with the designation 409Da (Ls180) were continuously produced until 1995.

The locomotive found a new life due to the repairs by Mag-Train and TOR-BUD. The renewed locomotive will be exhibited as a museum piece.

“The pride of Polish machinery and technology of Polish railways. Even for our employees, it was a pleasant memory and a pleasure to renovate, to participate in something special. There are specialists in our plant who remember the times when they worked at this Fablok plant and built such locomotives, ”said Tomasz Cecierski, President of the Management Board of Mag-Train Sp. z o. o
