Mendip Rail Receives New Hopper Wagons from VTG Rail
12.08.2024
The British division of Europe’s largest leasing company, VTG Rail UK, has commenced fulfilling an order for the construction materials operator Mendip Rail, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The first batch of 34 new HOA hopper wagons has been delivered to the customer. These wagons, with a capacity of 77 tons, are intended to replace outdated rolling stock that has been in service for over 35 years.
The contract includes the production of a total of 203 such wagons, with final delivery scheduled for May 2025.
The manufacturing process is taking place at the Greenbrier plant in Poland.
Mendip Rail transports up to 200,000 tons of limestone materials weekly.
The primary routes run from quarries in the Mendip Hills region to construction sites in London and southeastern England.
Typically, 40-50 hopper and covered wagons are used for these shipments.
This approach enables the operator to efficiently deliver up to 9 million tons of stone materials annually.
Mendip Rail, a joint venture between Heidelberg Materials UK and Aggregate Industries, chose rail transport for a reason.
This method significantly reduces the number of road trips, alleviating road congestion.
On average, it avoids up to 10,000 freight trips per week, which greatly eases the regional transportation infrastructure and helps improve environmental conditions.
