07.07.2023
Another step towards sustainable logistics: LTG Cargo will buy electric locomotives, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.
Lietuvos geležinkeliai (LTG) Groups freight transportation company LTG Cargo will purchase electric locomotives for the first time in its history. It is planned that about 100 million Euros will be invested in the purchase of new locomotives powered by green electricity, the spare parts, and their maintenance services.
BY the public procurement LTG Cargo plans to purchase both electric locomotives as well as technical support for their maintenance and the supply of spare parts. In this way, the aim is to ensure smooth and economically reasonable maintenance of the new locomotives for at least 3 years. The purchased locomotives will be used for cargo transportation on the country’s most important railway artery between Vilnius and Klaipėda seaport. The electricity required for cargo transportation will be produced only from renewable sources.

“We aim for comprehensive integration with the West and strengthening of services to the countrys customers, therefore we focus on both operational efficiency and the creation of sustainable logistics chains. Already today, the transportation of freight by railways is one of the most sustainable logistics solutions, and with the arrival of electric locomotives we will be able to transport freight in a completely green way. In addition, electric locomotives stand out for their extremely efficient operation, so we will be able to offer our customers even more competitive green transports”, says Eglė Šimė, Head of LTG Cargo.
The purchased electric locomotives will have to be able to transport the maximum up to 5.7 thousand tons weighing train sets transported by LTG Cargo. It is estimated that after purchasing electric locomotives, the company will save about 780 thousand tons of CO2 per year (compared to road transport).
The exact number of locomotives to be purchased will become clear after negotiations with the suppliers. It is anticipated that additional locomotives may be purchased under this locomotive fleet renewal contract in the future.
As a reminder, the European Unions Green Course commitments foresee that by 2030 around 30% of the more than 300 km of freight transported by road will have to be transported by environmentally friendly means of transport primarily by railways. Taking this into account, LTG Cargo strives to offer its customers more and more solutions that meet these European goals.
More precise dates for the purchase of electric locomotives will become clear after the successful completion of public procurement procedures. LTG Cargo will seek to purchase locomotives taking into account the data of the performed market consultations and compliance with the interests of national security and aiming to use the funds provided for the purchase as efficiently as possible.
