The locomotives, ordered in January 2022 for $132 million, are expected to replace the aging F59PH units. These older trains, purchased from Toronto’s GO Transit in 2011, no longer meet modern transit needs. Testing of the new locomotives, supported by Systra, is ongoing to ensure readiness for spring operations.

First Montréal Charger Loco Brings Enhanced Capacity

The introduction of the first Montréal Charger loco allows Exo to increase commuter train capacity. The trains can now expand from eight to 10 coaches, offering more flexibility to meet growing passenger demand.

The upgraded trains comply with Tier 4 emissions standards, prioritizing sustainability and efficiency. They are quieter, more fuel-efficient, and offer greater reliability for daily commuters, which is critical in urban transit systems.

Government Support for First Montréal Charger Loco

Québec’s Deputy Premier Geneviève Guilbault expressed support for Exo’s investment during her January 15 press statement. She emphasized the government’s role in financing this project and its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This transition represents a significant leap forward for sustainable transportation in Montréal. The first Montréal Charger loco showcases Exo’s commitment to a greener, more efficient transit network that aligns with modern environmental goals.

The remaining nine locomotives will arrive by 2025, completing this much-needed upgrade to Exo’s fleet. Together, they will improve service quality and support urban mobility for the northern and southern suburbs of Montréal.
