Finnish VR Group stops rail freight traffic with Russia
On April 6, the board of directors of the Finnish VR Group decided to stop rail freight transportation between Russia and Finland.
This is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply.
It is noted that the termination of contracts has begun, but the movement itself will completely stop no later than the end of the year.
“By the end of the summer, traffic will be reduced by about a third of the initial level. Some customers want to extend traffic until the end of the message period, but we are still negotiating to stop traffic faster. In any case, all Russian cargo transportation serviced by VR will stop no later than the end of the year,” noted Topi Simola, the acting Managing Director of VR Group.
Also, VR Group added that to date, Western sanctions do not apply to rail transportation between the EU and Russia, so the termination of VR contracts is agreed in the usual manner prescribed in the contracts.
