Eesti Raudtee will use only green electricity starting 2021
19.01.2021
In the second half of last year, Estonian Railways (Eesti Raudtee) organized the purchase of electricity only from renewable sources. An agreement has been signed with Elektrum Eesti OÜ, which provides for the supply of Eesti Raudtee’s infrastructure only with renewable energy, informs Railway Supply magazine with reference to the press service of Eesti Raudtee.
“Since the company consumes up to 40 GWh of electricity per year, which is comparable to the energy consumption of about ten thousand households a year, we believe that the transition to renewable energy makes a good contribution to protecting the environment and motivates passengers to prefer railway traffic.” the company said in a statement.
The Estonian government has decided to start electrifying the railway network in 2019. The first major goal of this project is to create by the end of 2024 a contact network on the sections of the Aegviidu-Tapa-Tartu railway. This will enable passengers to travel from Tallinn to Tartu using renewable energy sources.
