Deutsche Bahn announces new investment program
05.10.2022
The German carrier announced a record-breaking modernization program at the Berlin trade show Innotrans2022. By 2030, DB wants to allocate more than 19 billion euros for rolling stock renewal. This is the largest investment program in the history of a German company. The carrier plans to purchase new wagons, as well as passenger and freight locomotives. In this way, customers will be able to take advantage of the greater capacity and quality of the fleet.
It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to Nakolei.
Now we are investing in the trains of the future. With a record amount of more than 19 billion euros, we create the potential for even more demand. Modern vehicles make railways not only greener, but also more reliable and user-friendly, says Dr. Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn.
In terms of long haul, DB is expanding its ICE fleet with the new ICE L. Each month, DB expects three new ICE trains in 2023. By 2030, this fleet will increase to about 450 trains. New to this type of vehicle is the Spanish manufacturer Talgo ICE L train, which sets new standards in terms of accessibility: thanks to stepless access, wheelchair passengers can for the first time get on and off the ICE L without an assistant. The 23 new ICE L trains will be phased in from autumn 2024. These trains will run mainly on the Berlin-Amsterdam line. And in 2026, they will also run on tourist routes to Sylt and Oberstdorf.
The freight train of the future, which DB Cargo showed off at Innotrans2022, has become even more environmentally friendly, even on routes without a contact network. This is a so-called Dual-Power freight locomotive, which can switch to biofuel for driving on non-electrified lines. Freight wagons are modular and extremely versatile, and the digital automatic coupler is the new backbone of the freight train. This not only speeds up rail operations, but also adds a new dimension to the rail supply chain with power lines and operational data.
In addition to the completely new Dual-Power locomotive, I am delighted with our own development: the new m² wagons can be used flexibly and modularly for a wide variety of goods. There is a platform of different lengths and it can accommodate various structures for transportation. If we combine this train with digital couplers, it will be a decisive lever to transport more goods on a climate-friendly railway with limited capacity,” says Dr. Sigrid Nikutta, Board Member for Freight Transport at Deutsche Bahn.
