Canadian Pacific launches hydrogen locomotive
On January 24 Canadian Pacific (CP) announced the first launch of its mainline freight locomotive (H2OEL), powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
Canadian Pacific said its hydrogen locomotive program team is currently preparing for field testing of H2OEL, which stands for “Hydrogen Zero Emissions Locomotive”.
H2OEL is an upgrade of an existing diesel-electric linear locomotive. The diesel prime mover and traction generator were replaced with hydrogen fuel cells and batteries to power the unit traction motors.
