3330 ammunition-loaded wagons between Russia and Belarus
01.11.2022
Between March and September, 65,089 tons of ammunition in the amount of 1,940 wagons were transported from Belarus by rail to Russia. Between February and August, 37,267 tons of ammunition was shipped from Russia to Belarus by rail, which is equivalent to 1,390 wagons. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to RailFreight.
This data shows the importance of the railway infrastructure in this conflict and can give a general idea of the needs of the Russian army. Moreover, it shows the strength of the relationship between Putin and Lukashenka. For example, Belarus allowed Russia to carry out part of the invasion from its territory, giving Russia the shortest land route to Kyiv. On the other hand, this data also shows how significant the attacks on the railways organized by the rail partizans are.
February was the busiest month for ammunition exports to Belarus, which could probably be related to the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In fact, this month, 26,769 tons of ammunition were moved in this direction, which is more than 71 percent of the total and amounts to 951 wagons.
Russian railway is on the verge of collapse
In March, an additional 8,089 tons were transported, which is almost 22 percent. Since then, the amounts have decreased every month, with 2.4 tons of ammunition shipped between April and August. It is not clear whether the data for April and May were unavailable or whether there were no munitions entering Belarus from Russia during those two months.
As for the export of ammunition from Belarus to Russia, the busiest month was April. During this month, 22,534 tons of ammunition were sent to Russia, which is 689 wagons and almost 35 percent of the total. Between May and August, the flow stabilized and ranged from 6,033 to 8,606 tons in each of these months.
Another surge occurred in September: 14,479 tons, which is 442 wagons and more than 22 percent of the total. It is worth noting that since April, the transportation of ammunition from Russia to Belarus has significantly decreased, practically stopping. On the other hand, ammunition from Belarus to Russia is still going at a fairly high rate.
