The Egyptian National Railways (ENR) has put into service the first of six locomotive-hauled intercity trains built by Talgo. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to zdmira.

In April 2019, ENR and Talgo signed a €158 million contract for the supply of trains under a project funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The contract provided for the construction of a Talgo facility in Egypt, where the trains would undergo maintenance over the next 8 years.

The aluminum-bodied trains are basically the same as the ones Talgo is building for Germany and Denmark, but with the addition of a high-capacity air-conditioning system developed from Talgo’s experience in building high-speed trains for the Mecca-Medina service in Saudi Arabia and designed for field use at temperatures up to 50 °C.

The maximum speed of the train is 160 km/h. Each train consists of a locomotive and 15 cars, with a total of 490 seats. The train consists of five cars of the first and eight of the second class, as well as a car with a cafeteria and seats for passengers with limited mobility and a car in which a power plant is located to power its own needs. All carriages are equipped with wireless Internet access, first-class carriages are equipped with an infotainment system
