The update focuses on the Blackmud Creek bridge. It is one of the structures included in Phase 1 of the extension, as outlined by the City of Edmonton.

Capital Line South bridge work

Crews have installed the bridge girders for the new Blackmud Creek light-rail bridge. As Progressive Railroading reported, the work began on April 30 and was finished in five days. In total, crews placed 12 large girders using heavy cranes.

Also, city officials said the completed girder installation allows crews to continue with formwork, rebar placement and pouring the structure’s upper deck.

Project phases and next steps

The extension is being delivered in two phases. Phase 1 is now under construction. It will add 2.8 miles of high-floor light-rail transit.

Its scope includes an underpass at 23rd Avenue and bridges over Blackmud Creek and Anthony Henday Drive. In addition, it includes new stations in the Twin Brooks and Heritage Valley North neighborhoods.

Conceptual design work is also moving forward for Phase 2. That phase will extend the line from Ellerslie Road to Allard/Desrochers. Major construction is expected to take four to five years. Testing and commissioning will follow.
