EBRD to support electrification and modernization of Egypt’s main railway line

The Egyptian government plans to modernize and electrify the main railway line between Alexandria and the city of Abu Kir, located in the northeast of the country.

The loan for the works will be provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Thus, Alexandria will receive the first high-capacity line, reports the railway magazine Railway Supply.
The work will be carried out on a 22-kilometer section of the line between the main station of Alexandria and Abu Kir. Funding from the EBRD will finance the modernization of signaling and the installation of telecommunication systems. The money will also be used to purchase new rolling stock.

The funds received by the EBRD are part of an investment package that will be co-financed by the European Investment Bank, the French Development Agency and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The package is worth 1.6 billion euros.
