This next step builds on last month’s launch at 21 locations and means more passengers will be able to tap in with contactless instead of buying traditional tickets, as outlined in the Rail Delivery Group’s latest update on the rollout.

At these newly enabled stations, passengers no longer need to queue at ticket machines or ticket offices before they travel.

They can simply tap a contactless bank card or smart device on the gate and use pay-as-you-go contactless at 30 more stations across the South East, moving straight through the barriers without purchasing a paper ticket in advance — a shift also highlighted in Railway Supply’s coverage of earlier South East contactless expansion.

How contactless pay-as-you-go works across modes?

Contactless pay-as-you-go is designed to simplify multimodal travel on trains, the London Underground, buses and trams. Instead of juggling separate tickets, passengers can complete their whole trip using a single card or device while the system keeps track of the journeys they make.

A key feature is daily and weekly fare capping. The fare system automatically sums up all journeys and then applies caps so that travellers pay no more than the cheapest adult fare available for the trips they have made. This cap works both per day and across a Monday–Sunday travel week, helping passengers avoid paying more than necessary when they take multiple journeys.

Contactless pay-as-you-go in South East England and TfL integration

For contactless pay-as-you-go in South East England to work, train operators’ fares must be fully aligned with Transport for London’s fare system. This Transport for London fare system integration allows journeys that combine national rail and TfL services to be charged correctly on a single contactless medium.

During testing, integration issues were identified at certain Greater Anglia stations, so additional work is required before the technology can go live there, as noted in Greater Anglia’s customer update on the postponement.

Because of this Greater Anglia contactless payment delay, the Rail Delivery Group has confirmed that contactless pay-as-you-go at twenty Greater Anglia stations, including Stansted and Southend airports, will now be introduced next summer rather than this year. Passengers are expected to receive further updates ahead of the revised launch date.

Rail Delivery Group contactless rollout and regional plans

According to the Rail Delivery Group, passengers have already made 5.6 million journeys using contactless pay-as-you-go since June 2024, underlining the scale of the Rail Delivery Group contactless rollout. The organisation presents this growth as part of wider efforts to make paying for rail travel simpler and more convenient.

Alongside the expansion of contactless pay-as-you-go South East England services, train operators are offering more tailored products such as Flexi Season tickets and single-leg pricing. They are also running trials of simpler fare structures, aiming to make ticket options easier to understand.

Looking beyond the current contactless pay-as-you-go South East England scheme, the rail industry is exploring how pay-as-you-go can be extended to operate across different modes of transport in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands. In these areas, operators are working with local transport authorities to develop arrangements that build on the experience of TfL integrated contactless fares on mainline trains and urban services.
