Contactless fare payment system launches on ORCA
11.03.2026
The contactless fare payment system has gone live through INIT, which worked with Sound Transit. Also, the launch covers the One Regional Card for All (ORCA) fare system. In addition, six transit agencies use ORCA across the Puget Sound region of Washington.

ORCA fare system adds open contactless payment technology
The ORCA network is used for bus, ferry and light-rail services by:
- Sound Transit
- King County Metro
- Community Transit
- Everett Transit
- Kitsap Transit
- Pierce Transit
In addition, the new open contactless payment technology lets riders tap to pay. For example, riders can use a contactless credit card, debit card or mobile wallet to pay fares, according to the ORCA Tap to Pay FAQs.
Puget Sound transit agencies prepare for World Cup demand
Meanwhile, the company rolled out the contactless fare payment system. Transit providers in the region are preparing for increased ridership. At the same time, Progressive Railroading reported the match schedule. Seattle will host six FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in June and July. Separately, INIT officials provided an estimate. About 750,000 fans are expected to visit the region during the matches.
“Open payments reduce barriers and make transit the easy choice for everyday riders and visitors alike,” said ORCA Director Chris McKnight. “By partnering with INIT, people can now ride with the cards and devices they already carry.”
INIT extends contactless transit payments to other host cities
Still, INIT officials said the company is also deploying those systems in other host cities. In addition, those cities include Houston and Atlanta.
