Construction Begins at New Scarborough Subway Station

CANADA: Major construction has begun at the Lawrence and McCowan station in Toronto, advancing the Scarborough Subway Extension toward a second of its three planned stops.

Piling and excavation begin at the station site

Crews have started piling and excavation at Lawrence Avenue East and McCowan Road, according to Ontario’s July 31 announcement. The work follows earlier site clearing and utility relocations undertaken to prepare the location for station construction.

Lawrence and McCowan is the second of the extension’s three stations to reach major construction. Work began at Scarborough Centre station in September 2025, while the project’s stations, rail and systems contract had been awarded in January of that year.

The wider Scarborough Subway Extension is expected to support 3,000 workers annually during construction. The latest provincial release did not specify an opening date for the new station or the full extension.

Hospital access and bus transfers shape the station

The station will include a bus terminal connecting with express services on Lawrence Avenue and will provide a subway link to Scarborough General Hospital. The hospital is part of Scarborough Health Network, which serves 850,000 people across the eastern Greater Toronto Area.

The Metrolinx station profile lists 2041 forecasts of 5,290 customers during the busiest travel hour, 4,480 daily transfers to and from buses, and 3,470 jobs in the surrounding area.

These figures place the station’s passenger role around two practical connections: transfers between Line 2 and surface transit, and direct access to a major health-care and employment site.

Line 2 will extend 7.8 kilometres through Scarborough

The Scarborough Subway Extension will carry TTC Line 2 for 7.8 kilometres from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road. The project includes three new stations and connections with as many as six other transit options.

Once complete, the extension is expected to accommodate 105,000 daily trips and place 38,000 more residents and 34,000 jobs within a 10-minute walk of rapid transit. At Lawrence and McCowan, piling and excavation now turn that network plan into visible station construction.
