The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) said the East West rail corridor reopened once “complex” restoration works were completed, in a statement from ARTC. Services have recommenced from Sydney to Perth, Melbourne to Perth and Adeliade to Darwin.

ARTC said the response included a 97-hour recovery operation to retrieve the 11 wagons that partially derailed and restore the track. Crews worked in challenging weather conditions, including temperatures above 40C.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation. ARTC said it will continue to work closely with the train operator and the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator as the inquiry continues.

ARTC also thanked Aurizon for supporting the recovery operation with additional equipment and crews, as also reported by Rail Express.
