Circular economy in rail is the focus of a new Australasian Railway Association report designed to help rail organisations make wider use of recycled, reused and repurposed materials across their operations.

Circular economy in rail guidance

The report, Circular Opportunities in Rail⁠, combines policy guidance, practical advice and industry case studies to support the adoption of circular economy principles in the rail sector.

ARA Chief Executive Officer Caroline Wilkie said the report forms part of the association’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices and reducing the environmental footprint of the industry.

“With circular solutions increasingly becoming a requirement in construction project specifications, this guide offers real-world advice for rail organisations seeking to increase their focus on this critical issue,” Wilkie said.

Case studies and practical rail approaches

The report includes case studies⁠ from the Australian Rail Track Corporation, Metro Trains Melbourne, the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia, Aurizon, Yarra Trams, Aurecon and Victoria’s Level Crossing Removal Project.

It also outlines practical approaches for rail suppliers, asset owners and project delivery organisations, including examples of recycled materials and circular design principles that can be used in rail infrastructure projects.

According to the ARA, broader use of circular economy practices could help improve environmental outcomes, increase resource efficiency and support innovation across the rail industry.
