SNTF Completes Modernisation of 20 EMD Locomotives

ALGERIA: SNTF has completed the modernisation of 20 EMD diesel-electric locomotives with Progress Rail support, returning the upgraded units to the national rail network after work by local technicians.

Local work returns upgraded traction to service

The programme was carried out in Algeria by SNTF technicians, with Progress Rail supporting the work. According to the manufacturer’s official project announcement, the modernisation was intended to improve reliability, fuel efficiency and performance across the operator’s diesel fleet.

Local execution is an important part of the project. It gave SNTF’s workforce a direct role in completing the upgrades while transferring technical knowledge to Algerian railway workshops. The result is 20 modernised locomotives available for further operation on the national network.

SNTF extends the value of its existing fleet

For SNTF, the programme offers a way to extend locomotive service life and improve fleet availability without waiting for replacement rolling stock. It also keeps maintenance capability closer to the railway’s own operating environment.

Progress Rail’s locomotive portfolio includes rebuilding existing equipment, installing modern control systems and new engines, and remanufacturing EMD 567, 645 and 710 engines. However, the company’s public announcement did not identify the class of the 20 SNTF locomotives or specify the components changed under this project.

No project cost, workshop location or completion timetable was disclosed. The confirmed outcome is therefore narrow but concrete: SNTF has finished the local modernisation programme and returned 20 upgraded EMD diesel-electric locomotives to its fleet.
