CN Rail Land Agreement Advances Kitchener Line Expansion
20.10.2025
Ontario reached an important milestone with the agreement to purchase 21 kilometers of land from CN rail that will grow the Kitchener Line and boost GO service within the region.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

CN Rail Partnership Accelerates Ontario’s Rail Goals
The provincial government remains investing in state-of-the-art, large-capacity rail corridors. Since CN Rail controls significant segments of the Kitchener Line, this agreement allows the province to build dedicated GO Transit tracks for dedicated commuter use.
The pact will divorce passenger and freight flows, decreasing delays and increasing reliability. And because traffic historically slowed the service, the new system will greatly enhance travel speed and schedule flexibility along the corridor.
Later this November, Metrolinx will be introducing 18 more weekend trips between Union Station and Bramalea, along with the first ever Sunday service to Kitchener. These enhancements are another step toward two-way, all-day GO connectivity.
CN Rail Deal Supports Long-Term Regional Development
The Kitchener Extension Project is 40 kilometers of two-way-new track, ivor upgrading, andrengineering the bridges and platforms. The engineers are finishing realignments at Guelph and Kitchener to improve safety, durability, and capacity for future electrification.
Since Kitchener and Waterloo are further becoming technology and innovation hubs, expanded commuter rail service facilitates business growth and facilitates the attraction of new investment. The partnership with CN Rail illustrates the power of public–private collaboration to propel the sustainable mobility strategy for Ontario.
Every step of this undertaking supports the broader vision for the province—building a rapid, integrated, and sustainable rail system that joins communities and takes traffic off the provincial highways.
