China–Laos Railway Increases Freight Flow and Export Capacity

Since its launch in 2021, more than 60,000 freight trains have operated on the route, moving over 67.6 million tons of cargo. About 15 million tons came from cross-border shipments, highlighting the railway’s vital role in trade between China and Southeast Asian countries.

Increased freight volume came from larger train capacity — 2,500 to 2,800 tons — and simplified customs formalities. This helped shorten processing time and reduce operation expenditure for logistics companies.

China–Laos Railway Promotes Regional Development

Cooperation between Chinese railways operators (China Railway), Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia assisted in the rationalization of schedules and technical coordination. Consequently, passenger and freight traffic steadily expand yearly.

Passenger services also register magnificent advancements: over 80,000 trains have transported more than 59 million passengers. This validates the double role of the railway channeling the way to a major economic and socially important initiative.

Lao’s major export comprises farm produce, natural rubber, and mining products. The supplies offer stable raw materials to China while opening new markets for Laos and ensuring sustained economic growth.

The China–Laos Railway reinforces local connectivity and facilitates the building of logistics corridors and a stable long-term foundation for economic co-operation.
