The agreement is expected to support faster progress on major Manitoba initiatives, including Port of Churchill Plus. Valued at CA$262.5 million, the project includes Port of Churchill modernization. Also, it includes rail improvements, an all-weather road and expanded storage capacity.
Port of Churchill Plus and Hudson Bay Railway upgrade
The project is intended to turn the port into a year-round Arctic gateway. Also, it would create a more reliable northern trade corridor for exports to European markets. With upgraded infrastructure, the port could better handle minerals and grain. In addition, it could handle potash, liquefied natural gas and energy exports.
On the rail side, Port of Churchill Plus calls for a Hudson Bay Railway upgrade to Class I standards. The railway is owned by Arctic Gateway Group. It operates more than 600 miles of track linking The Pas, Churchill and the port.
Separately, a study is also underway to assess the project’s longer-term export potential. It focuses on certain commodities, including LNG.
