17.02.2026
Amtrak’s California Zephyr route is widely considered the most beautiful train route in the United States. It leaves every day from Emeryville, as shown in the California Zephyr timetable. The trip runs 2,438 miles to Chicago and covers about two-thirds of the country in roughly 52 hours.

Why the Amtrak California Zephyr stands out?
Amtrak operates scenic train journeys across the United States, and many travelers agree the Amtrak California Zephyr between Emeryville and Chicago is the most beautiful option available, according to Amtrak. Also, the 2,438-mile train journey is the longest passenger train route in the U.S., stretching across broad regions in a little more than two days.

San Francisco travelers can take an Amtrak Thruway bus that runs directly to the Emeryville station across the bay. From there, the California Zephyr departs once daily. In addition, over three days and two nights, the trip takes in the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Nebraska’s prairies, and more.
Key stops and scenery on the California Zephyr route
The Emeryville to Chicago train passes through major cities including Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Omaha. Soon after leaving the bay, passengers can look for spectacular scenery through the Sierra Nevada and Donner Pass, especially near Donner Lake.
Meanwhile, the route moves into dramatic stretches of the Rocky Mountains, including canyons in the Colorado River valley. In Utah and Nevada, views open up over vast landscapes including the Bonneville Salt Flats and the Humboldt River Valley, before the train continues into expansive Nebraska prairies. It then crosses the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and travels through the rolling hills of Iowa before arriving in Chicago.
Superliner cars, the observation car, and ticket options
The California Zephyr uses Amtrak’s Superliner double-decker cars, which include both coach seating and sleeping accommodations. There’s also a dining car and a popular observation car with panoramic windows where guests gather to watch the scenery through the Rockies and the Sierras.
Travelers can book through Amtrak’s official website and choose coach seating, a small private roomette, or a larger bedroom. Still, booking early can lead to one-way coach tickets priced between $150 and $250, but meals are not included, as reported by Secret San Francisco. If you choose a sleeper accommodation, one-way prices start around $600 and include meals.
